Akosua Boakye
Contemporary African
Akosua began her dance training at Laban and in 1994 transferred to Roehampton Institute, graduating in 1997 with a BA combined (Hons) in Dance Studies and Social Policy and Administration. During her dance training in London she regularly travelled to Ghana taking classes in West African traditional dances. As part of her dance studies, in 1995 she was selected to represent Roehampton institute in an exchange programme at Gaucher College, Baltimore, Maryland. Akosua went on to work and tour in Atlanta performing with the Soweto Street Beat Dance Company from South Africa.
Subsequently Akosua enrolled on a teacher training course at Morley College. She then began as a freelance dance teacher part time in schools and the community. Since 2002 Akosua has been solely committed to teaching dance in education and community settings. Over the years she has worked extensively with young people for various youth performing arts projects including the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Impact Dance, Stuart Thomas Dance, Paddington Arts, East London Dance and L'Ouverture. In 2005 Akosua became head of Dance Studies at Kensington and Chelsea College where she teaches Contemporary and African dance. In the summer of 2006 she began running African dance classes at the Siobhan Davis Studios, ending in the summer of 2007. In May this year Akosua became curriculum leader for performing Arts at Kensington and Chelsea College. She is currently further developing her own style and movement vocabulary in African Dance and pursuing her final year of her PGCE. |
